Keep in mind that volcanic activity has surged all around the Earth this past few months. So we are dealing with a much larger phenomenon than this island eruption. Just what is the driver for this tectonic activity has not been articulated cleanly enough to understand it. There is an orbital seasonal factor, volcanism generally increases during the first half of the calendar year and wanes during the last half. But why then is there scant activity one year and spectacular eruptions in abundence in a following year?
